Countertop Care and Maintenance

While granite countertops are a favorite choice due to their beauty and durability, they are not impervious to damage. Regular care includes proper cleaning and the use of sealers to prevent staining.

Do granite countertops need to be sealed?

The process of sealing your stone is very simple and home owner friendly. Most quality sealers require resealing every 3-5 years. You can test your stone to see if it needs resealing by placing a water soaked cloth on the counter and wait 5 minutes. If the stone is dark in that spot, you should reseal the counters. If you spill a liquid that may stain the stone, you should wipe it up as soon as possible. If a stain occurs, a poultice (paste) can be used to try to remove the stain. Any stone that has a honed finish is more susceptible to staining. Marble is softer than granite and also more prone to scratches.

What is the best cleaner for stone countertops?

You can use several things to clean your stone. A damp cloth with mild soap and water is always safe to use for daily cleaning. Glass cleaner without ammonia is also safe for cleaning. Do not use any abrasive cleaners on your natural stone. There are polishes available on the market to give your polished stone a beautiful shine. Some of the brand names are Rock Doctor or Simple green, they have a specially formulated solution for cleaning and polishing natural stone (www.simplegreen.com). Polishes must be used in moderation because you may experience a “build up” that will leave a cloudy look to the stone. Only use these products as directed by the manufacturer. All products must be tested in an inconspicuous area before using entire surface. Caring for your stone is easy with these few simple instructions.
